A Chinese Reformer in Exile is an encyclopaedic reference work documenting the exile years of imperial China’s most famous reformer, Kang Youwei, and the political organization he mobilized in North America and worldwide to transform China’s autocratic empire into a constitutional monarchy. Chinese in Canada, the United States, and Mexico formed at least 160 Chinese Empire Reform Association chapters, incorporating schools, newspapers, military academies, women’s associations, businesses, and political pressure campaigns. Based on Robert Worden’s 1972 Georgetown University Ph.D. dissertation, a multinational team of historians contribute new insights from 50 years of additional scholarship and previously unknown archival materials.

Vesna Krmelj se je v svoji študiji o Cukrarni poglobila v vse plasti te simbolne zgradbe. Čeprav trenutno stanje spomenika kaže na globoko nerazumevanje njegovega pomena, neupoštevanje zakonske zaščite in pogubne posledice vztrajanja pri starih, nepremišljenih urbanističnih idejah, je Cukrarno tudi z vpogledom te knjižice še mogoče in hkrati nujno rešiti ter vsaj delno obnoviti. Stavba kot izjemno kvalitetna klasicistična industrijska arhitektura zgodnjega 19. stoletja ter prostor literarnega delovanja slovenske moderne in sodobnih likovnih umetnikov je priča ljubljanskih gospodarskih in kulturnih presežkov, ki bi se jih Slovenci morali naučiti razumeti, živeti in ohraniti za prihodnje rodove.

From 1934 onwards, the city government provided funds to revive the construction industry and to push on with the renewal of the city. Many “outdated” and “traffic-obstructing” buildings were destroyed, facades were renovated by removing ornaments and structural elements which were then considered "worthless" and "tasteless”. This book deals with a chapter of the architectural and urban history of Vienna that has thus far been neglected, examines the “healing” of the city in its dimensions as well as the parallel discussions of experts, and compares the renewal of the city of Vienna with similar developments in other European countries in the 1930s.

With the painting The Wind Bride (1914, see cover), the painter Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) depicted the climax of his amorous relationship with Alma Mahler. The amour fou ended in disappointment, which manifested itself in a symbolic overpainting - the psychologically positive red gave way to a cool blue. In Kokoschka's case, the urge for self-expression within the framework of a clearly defined artist's image began at the age of 22. He created this image in an economically determined manner, which became an artistic myth throughout his life through the blending of fantasy stories and lived experience and still determines and often falsifies the interpretation of his works from the Expressionist phase today. In his stories and lectures, reality and self-presentation were transfigured into an artistic myth to which the scientific and art-historical biography succumbed. Only recently have art historians tended to interpret the artist in terms of marketing strategy. In Kokoschka's case, it was not gaps in his memory or cognitive illusions that formed his artistic myth - it was the deliberate, all-encompassing staging.

Joining Up connects the First and Second World Wars by examining how the cultural legacy of the First World War affected young men’s attitudes to service and subjective conceptions of wartime masculinity during the Second World War. It uses original and archival oral histories and the Mass Observation Archive to explore how young men in inter-war Britain encountered and understood representations of the Great War in popular culture and day-to-day-life. By demonstrating the breadth of representations through which the cultural memory of the Great War was transmitted and the diversity of young men’s responses, Joining Up makes a significant intervention in the cultural history of the Great War, and interactions with Great War veterans are shown to be more important than previously acknowledged. Joining Up also adds new depth to understandings of Second World War enlistment and masculinity. It shows that British men had varied attitudes and explores why. Most were reluctant servicemen, but compliance with conscription was increased by a manpower system that gave men some agency over how they served. Understandings of the Great War informed men’s attitudes and service preferences, commonly discouraging service in the Army. Nevertheless, some enthusiastically anticipated service, especially if they hoped to join the RAF. Men’s subjective conceptions of wartime masculinity are shown to be diverse. Long-standing constructions of military masculinity were durable, and often reinforced by representations of the Great War, and men’s conceptions of wartime masculinity often diverged from the temperature masculinity that dominated public discourse.

His famous boxes and his collage work have been admired and widely studied. However, Cornell also produced an extraordinary body of film work, a serious contribution to 20th-century avant-garde cinema, and this has been much less examined. This book offers a micro-global history of humanitarianism and medical care during the ‘long’ Second World War, challenging the traditional Eurocentric chronological boundaries of 1939/1945. It takes as its starting point the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931, which led to the progressive dislocation of the League of Nations, with Japanese, German and Soviet departures in the 1930s. It ends with the termination of the Korean War in 1953 and the subsequent dismantling of the first United Coalition and UN peace enforcement operation. This periodisation allows the contributors to consider the role of extra-European spaces and conflicts, such as the Italo-Ethiopian War, conflict between Peru and Ecuador, and the Second Sino-Japanese War. Using innovative methodological approaches, including a focus on medical care and intimacy (Chapters 1 and 4), this book is neither structured around breaks and ruptures, nor linear shifts from ‘imperial humanitarianism’ to ‘neo-humanitarianism’ or ‘amateurism’ to ‘professionalism’. Instead of creating a metanarrative and an overarching story of humanitarianism during the long Second World War, it considers the slow, messy and ambivalent transformation of humanitarian actors’ relations to the suffering of distant others through studying humanitarian encounters, practices, spaces and affects. Paying close attention to actors such as French colonial doctors (Chapter 2), Swiss ICRC delegates (Chapters 3 and 10), Egyptian relief workers (Chapter 4), Chinese-style physicians (Chapter 5), Peruvian and Ecuadorian nurses (Chapter 6) and American members of the Unitarian Service Committee (Chapter 7), this book does not erase the important differences between them but provides a more holistic story of humanitarianism: one that recognises its complexity and the intensification of circulations from one conflict and front to another.

Preteklost nas skozi Prelovškov zapis med drugim uči, kako ravnati, ko visi nad narodovo dediščino Damoklejev meč: ker takrat nismo pristali na tuja mnenja in blokade, povprečnost in negativno selekcijo, Slovenci danes hranimo in beremo knjige v vrhunskem in svetovno znanem arhitekturnem spomeniku.

Im Jahr 1929 besuchten zwei Delegationen des Berliner Magistrats die USA. Den offiziellen Anlass zu den Fahrten bildete eine Einladung des New Yorker Bürgermeisters James J. Walker. Sowohl Walkers Visite in Berlin zwei Jahre zuvor als auch die Gegenbesuche stießen in der deutschen und amerikanischen Öffentlichkeit auf großes Interesse. Die Fahrten bildeten den Höhepunkt eines breiten Erfahrungs- und Kulturaustausches, der bereits im Kaiserreich begonnen hatte. Deutsche und amerikanische Kommunalpolitiker, Verwaltungsexperten, Stadt- und Verkehrsplaner wollten auf diese Weise von den Erfahrungen der jeweils anderen Seite lernen, um für die Herausforderungen der Zukunft in den rasch wachsenden Großstädten gewappnet zu sein. Zugleich verbanden sich mit diesen Reisen außenpolitische Hoffnungen auf eine Verbesserung des deutsch-amerikanischen Verhältnisses nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Das vierte Ernst-Reuter-Heft beschreibt die historischen Hintergründe und die Entwicklung dieser transatlantischen Kontakte. Er zeigt auf, wie sich in den USA-Reisen des Jahres 1929 exemplarisch viele der drängenden Fragen und Probleme der Weimarer Republik spiegelten.

Spomenik revolucije Draga Tršarja dobiva s pričujočo knjižico prvo temeljito umetnostnozgodovinsko analizo in interpretacijo. Na podlagi dostopnih virov nam avtor pronicljivo razkriva zgodbo natečaja za spomenik in nastajanja te moderne javne plastike ter njen ikonografski okvir. V obdobjih, kot so bila 60. leta in kot je današnji čas, je takšnim naročilom le redko mogoče prerasti ideološke meje in nagovoriti predvsem s svojo izvirno likovno kvaliteto. Tršarjev spomenik revolucije, ki je našel svoj prostor v zavetju dreves na nekdanjem uršulinskem vrtu, je eden takšnih.

This book revives the lives and public work of two generations of the Simon family who, over a period of more than a century (1860–1970), had a powerful influence in shaping modern Manchester. It uses a combination of collective biography and thematic essays to rehabilitate and reappraise their lives, and to consider their various individual and collective contributions to society, locally and nationally. As well as focusing on four key individuals (Henry and Emily, Ernest and Shena), the core aim of the book is to study the family as a cross-generational unit and thereby elucidate how their work was shaped a distinctive family ethos of public service. Central to forming this family ethos was the Simons’ German ancestry and their deep connection with Manchester’s German community. To contextualise this link, the studies of the Simon family in the book are foregrounded by an overview of Manchester’s nineteenth century German diaspora.

Theodor Nöldeke war einer der bekanntesten und einflussreichsten Orientalisten im Kaiserreich und weit darüber hinaus. Seine Haltung zu Nation, Religion und Wissenschaft bot vielen jüdischen Wissenschaftlern die Chance, sich aufgrund ihrer Leistungen einen Platz in der Gelehrtenwelt zu sichern. Die erhaltenen Briefe seiner vor allem jüdischen Korrespondenten geben einen Einblick in deren Lebenswelt, Karrierewege aber auch Herausforderungen und bieten so einen Beitrag zur deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte. Neben bekannten Größen wie Abraham Geiger kommen Gelehrte zu Wort, die z. T. ganz vergessen wurden, wie etwa der Breslauer Professor Siegmund Fraenkel. Neben diesem wissenschaftsgeschichtlich weitestgehend unberücksichtigten Handeln und Wirken Nöldekes für jüdische Gelehrte, wird ein weiterer Aspekt beleuchtet: Sein Auftreten im außerwissenschaftlichen, öffentlichen Rahmen. Wie unterschiedlich dies vor allem außerhalb der Wissenschaftswelt wahrgenommen wurde und wie wichtig es für uns heute ist, beide Seiten zusammenzubringen, zeigt dieses Buch.
